This workshop focuses on several domains of cultural competence. This module is derived from “Cultural Competence: A Journey” (http:bphc.hrsa.gov/cultural competence). The seven domains that are addressed include 1) values and attitudes that promote mutual respect, 2) communicating sensitivity and awareness, 3) community participation through engaging community leaders, 4) physical environments such as marketing, advertising and pictures, 5) policies and procedures, 6) populations, and 7) professional development.

Module VI:
Diversity in the Workplace. Personal vs. Personnel
Cultural Competence is often about an individual’s ability to become aware of his or her own personal attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors that influence (consciously or sub-consciously) interactions with others. Becoming aware of the presence and impact of internal behaviors constitutes the first step people take toward successful interaction with those who possess different backgrounds from their own. Through interactive exercises and group discussions, participants will develop an understanding of how pre-judgments and fears affect their perceptions and interactions with one another. Participants will begin to explore ways to actively support others and discontinue inappropriate speech and behavior by increasing awareness of stereotypes, dominant cultural practices and privilege.
Goal of Module VIII: To effectively examine personal attitudes and beliefs about various cultural groups.
Objective 1: Participants will learn to identify situations and experiences that illustrate their own attitudes and beliefs.
Objective 2: Participants will recognize personal stereotypes and prejudices.
Objective 3: Participants will explain barriers to changing personal behavior.
